I never thought of doing a word cloud for science publications, but it makes perfect sense.I just did a few word clouds for my papers, and then compared with a word cloud for my dissertation. It's a nice way to procrastinate!
You are one of the few people I know who actually knows how semiconductor lasers work. I had a weird experience with a green laser yesterday that I'm still looking for an explanation for. When I diffracted the output of a 532nm laser through a 1000nm grating, I got 3 spots instead of one at the first-order diffraction position. Whether I got 3 spots or one seemed to depend on the temperature of the laser pointer. (See http://gasstationwithoutpumps.wordpress.com/2014/01/09/second-day-of-freshman-design-seminar/ )
